Department Overview

PG&E's Information Technology (IT) organization is comprised of various unified departments which collaborate effectively in order to deliver high quality technology solutions.
The Enterprise Mobility Center of Excellence is a new enterprise team that is responsible for working collaboratively with the lines of business (e.g., Gas Operations, Electric Operations, etc.) to implement consumer grade mobile solutions across various user groups (e.g., field users, office workers, etc.). This includes, but is not limited to:
• Deploying best-in-class / rapid delivery capability for mobile solutions
• Simplifying, improving, and standardizing business work management processes for mobile needs

SMARTworks consists of a staff of highly skilled professionals working together to produce mobile solutions following an agile methodology. We are a "start-up" department within IT and building a team of driven and creative mobile developers. We take the time to understand our partners' needs and translate those into solutions that delight our users. Our goal is to deliver products with intuitive user experience that will improve PG&E employees' safety, productivity and overall well-being.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Design Lead in the SMARTworks team who will concurrently support one or more custom mobility products across mobile app development. You will support the team, the Product Owner, and Scrum Master to effectively communicate the vision of a product based on user-centric design principles. You will be responsible for bring the users' desired experience to light through experience mapping, story boarding, and prototyping.

Minimum Education/Skills:
• Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Applied Psychology, Fine Arts, Web Design, Human-Computer Interaction etc. or equivalent work experience
• 7+ years of related work experience
• Experience as a Design Lead of an agile development team
• Experience with design of mobile applications

Desired Education / Skills:
• Masters of Arts or Masters of Science in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Applied Psychology, Fine Arts, Web Design, etc. or equivalent work experience
• 5+ years of experience working as a Design Lead in an agile environment
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, or Sketch
• Experience with InVision, Principle, or Framer JS
• Experience with After Effects
• Deep knowledge of relevant domains/products/journeys
• Ability to promote innovative thinking and user-centric-approach within the team
• Ability to facilitate design workshops
• Past developer experience
• Strong communication skills with ability to communicate complex messages and teach new concepts
• Active coach and mentor whose goal is to grow and maximize the team's potential
• Brings a high-energy and passionate outlook to the job and can influence those around her/him
• Able to build a sense of trust and rapport that creates a comfortable & effective workplace
• Ability to build strong relationships and influence leadership and stakeholders


• Advocate effectively for the user to Product Owner and Technical Lead/Architect
• Champion user-centric design and coach other on building user empathy
• Support product teams in translating business requirements into engaging interactive experiences
• Create assets that address user pain and unmet needs with timely delivery
• Lead user research
• Lead usability and usefulness workshops
• Develop user journeys that motivate users to engage fully with the interactive concept/prototype
• Develop strong perspective on product vision
• Develop "aspirational design" for a product based on user feedback
• Effectively communicate vision to product delivery team with quality assets such as prototypes and story boards
• Recognize the most important aspects of end-user work
• Structure and execute complex problem-solving sessions to address end-user needs
• Identify a "plan of action" with Product Owners and Scrum Masters to help form product roadmap
• Drive consensus with Product Owner on vision
• Collaboratively work with design and development teams
• Devise empathic, elegant design alternatives
• Share and leverage deep UX experience to guide the design of world-class user experience solutions
