About the Role:

EDF Energy is a core part of the EDF Group, one of the largest energy companies in Europe with key business operations in the UK, France, Italy, Belgium and Poland. EDF are recruiting for a Lead Technical Instructor - Simulator Training, to join the Hinkley Point C project. The job holder will be allocated responsibility for simulator training where as a team leader they will interface with the Training Development Team and oversee the Delivery and Evaluation of high quality simulator training facilities, resources and programmes that will directly support the achievement and maintenance of a fully competent workforce through all stages of the HPC project.

The NNB Training Department is part of the pre-operations directorate and will grow to approximately 70 NNB employees, based in the SW of England. As part of this group, the Technical Training section will be responsible for the development and delivery of technical training courses relating to the operation and maintenance of HPC including meeting the technical training needs of the pre-operations department throughout the phases of the project in the approach to commercial operations.

The Lead Technical Instructor - Simulator Training, will work closely with the Lead Technical Instructor - EPR Technology & Systems and the training development team, to provide a key training delivery service to NNB that significantly influences the achievement of competence of the organisation. This requires key relationships with:

Department Training Programme Owners for the successful development of competence within their staff

Departmental Line managers for the negotiation of Subject Matter Expert support to training delivery

EPR stakeholders and SMEs for the maintenance of source data for training and delivery of material

Other lead training roles to ensure consistency of approach in the application of the SAT process

External contractors for the supply of training delivery services.

External Training authorities for developments in adult learning technology and approaches

In managing these relationships the Lead Technical Instructor - Simulator Training must make key decisions, balancing training good practice, department requirements and the overarching needs of the organisation to shape training strategy for their accredited programme and implement that strategy through their technical training delivery team. The Operations Training Manager will be kept informed of progress and any aspects that may influence accreditation strategy, training budget or project schedule.

The Lead Technical Instructor - Simulator Training will manage and implement a systematic approach to training primarily focusing on delivery and evaluation, using their influence within the wider NNB, EDF Energy and EDF Group to harness existing training practices from EDFE Generation and Flamanville, whilst working closely with the NNB training development team in order to ensure the competence of technical staff for the HPC EPR.

Oversee the detailed evaluation of individual and team job performance requirements to demonstrate that training delivery meets the specific needs of the employees.

Guide the delivery and evaluation of training programme objectives, ensuring the specific performance, conditions and standards are met.

Support the development of high quality simulator training materials to facilitate the delivery of engaging effective training that will ensure individuals and teams achieve the competence necessary to meet the job performance requirements.

The successful candidate will be characterised by the following knowledge, qualifications and experience:


Degree qualified in a technical or science based subject or able to demonstrate equivalent experience

At least 2 years experience of delivering simulator training in a nuclear training environment

A good understanding of the key aspects of nuclear power plant systems and operation

SAT (Systematic Approach to Training) process and principles knowledge and practical skills preferably gained in a large complex technical environment such as the MOD, nuclear or other safety critical industry.

Excellent organisational, communication and influencing skills with experience in customer and stakeholder relations.

Knowledgeable in the use of modern learning methods and media and experience of harnessing these in the development of blended learning programmes.

Strong IT skills including standard applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel


Experienced in the use of training management infrastructures and systems, their applications and interfaces including learning content management and learning management systems.

At least 2 years experience as a duly authorised nuclear plant operator.

First hand experience of leading a team to deliver systematically derived training processes to large training programmes with multiple stakeholders

Project management experience associated with specification, development and commissioning of a training simulator

Experience of development of training delivery infrastructure and programmes

Experience in the preparation for training audit and assurance
