The Project Engineer is responsible for identifying the most appropriate technical and material solutions or other variables to optimize the system proposals. Deliverables such as equipment specifications, concept design drawings, site evaluations, interconnection and single line diagrams, and other supporting detail as required will be managed by this position. This position will also work with internal resources, sub-contracting Professional Engineers, the Customer, and local regulatory entities to create a design that meets the requirements of all stake holders. The Project Engineer is also responsible for preparing and supporting construction crews for system installation.
Attend site qualification visits to collect information required to complete the proposal process, design and permitting of solar electric systems.
Develop structural and electrical conceptual design, including technology selection, layouts and drawings, electrical and roof interface for solar electric systems that meet all requirements for submission of proposals.
Perform technical due diligence for RFP's or similar as required by official response documents. Verify or identify key requirements, to provide most appropriate solution or response.
Prepares cost estimates to include all material, labor, subcontracted items, contingencies, warranties and overhead and profit.
Performs and/or review detailed financial analysis, including life cycle cost analysis, cashflow statements and proformas that capture all operating, maintenance and replacement costs.
Utilize modeling tools such as production estimating tools, financial modeling tools, and/or material optimizing methods to validate most appropriate design and material solutions. Work with other departments to provide best estimating and modeling information.
Develop structural and electrical design drawings for solar electric systems that meet all national, provincial, and local code requirements as well as requirements of all other stakeholders.
Coordinate with and manage detailed design activities from professionally licensed engineering support.
Manage the submission of drawings to the appropriate agency in order to obtain construction permits.
Coordinate the development of a bill of material for each project based on the final approved design.
Provide technical input to support the interconnection application and utility approval process.
Provide support during the inspection of system installations in order to obtain final inspection approval.
Manage CAD resources and priorities to effectively meet required timelines. Maintain report to track new opportunities, for use in forecasting, updating as required.
Provide technical support and deliverables for utility specific interconnection applications, rebate applications, performance validation models or any other technical support for commercial operation.
Qualifications: Technical/Job Skill Qualifications:
The candidate must meet the following minimum qualifications and have demonstrated the following technical or job skills:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree.
5 to 8 years of relevant work experience working in the energy, engineering and/or construction industry, with at least 3 years working in the solar industry.
Experience performing design, development and permitting activities with a solar electric development, design or installation company, or experience performing design, development and permitting activities with a construction company.
Professional Engineering (PE) registration, EIT working to PE, Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and/or LEED Accreditation preferred
If required, must meet eligibility requirements for access to government facilities, may be subject to government security
Experience designing electrical systems,experience with electrical switchgear or sub-stations, or experience with distributed generation system design.
Knowledge and experience in the development of customer proposals, vendor agreements, and subcontractor contracts.
Experience in customer presentations, including excellent writing skills.
Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD 2009 software.
Strong organizational skills to manage the activities required in the design and permitting of solar electric systems.
Good working knowledge of MS Office programs, specifically Word and Excel.
