About the Role:

Thermal management is an essential aspect to keep high voltage equipment working for decades with extreme high demand on reliability. Natural convection is therefore the preferred cooling solution. Energy efficiency requirement compelled by climate change requires excellent thermal management of high voltage high power equipment. CFD is the state of art method to accurately estimate the temperature field in these devices.
The task is to study natural convection in simplified geometries representing the high voltage equipment and systems using OpenFOAM and to study the solution behavior for typical flow conditions for both steady-state and time-dependent heat flux generation. The student will evaluate the performance of different discretization schemes and modeling assumptions. The work will also involve parameter studies setting up automatic loops for computation in a high performance computing environment as well as pre- and post-processing with the purpose of deriving correlations that describe the heat transfer rate. Systematic literature survey for natural convention for relevant geometry and flow conditions is part of the thesis work. Work may also target two-phase flows and/or flows in porous media as well as fluid-structure interaction.

We are looking for a motivated student pursuing master degree in thermal engineering or chemical engineering specialized in modeling and numerical simulation of fluid dynamics and heat transfer, possibly two-phase flows, flows in porous media or modeling of fluid-structure interactions. Experience in OpenFOAM and programing in C++ and python is an added advantage.
