Ex Military Personnel Find Space in the Oil & Gas Sector

The Oil & Gas sector is expected to recruit more than 120,000 personnel globally over the next 10 years.

However, those interested in building their career within the sector must be willing to display an extremely high level of professional work ethic while handling assignments under tough conditions. It’s a very demanding sector and not for the faint hearted.

Having said that, ex military personnel are extremely disciplined, possess exceptional leadership, inter personal, organizational, technical & project management skills, and have an innate sense of loyalty while responding to the call of duty. Hence, they are more than capable of rising up to the demands of the sector.

Again, they bring specific skills – an understanding of offshore operations, expertise in naval diving, proficiency in fuel technology, and an exceptional engineering mind, which could be utilized by the sector.

The industry needs to be very transparent in setting expectations from the prospective ex military personnel, while communicating clearly the excellent career growth opportunities it has to offer.

As per Oil & Gas UK, the sector is a bellwether in providing highly technical jobs under challenging environments across UK.

It is expected to recruit around 7000 personnel year-on-year over the next 5 years to support offshore activities. The key stakeholders within the energy sector in UK are collaborating with the MoD (Ministry of Defence) and the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to map key transferable skills, match sector profiles with military roles, and identify specific training needs.

The Oil & Gas firms such as GE Oil & Gas among others have developed specific programs for ex military personnel that would enable them to have an insight into the functioning of the sector.

This shows the commitment from decision makers related to energy in providing job opportunities to those from the armed forces.
