US Senate energy bill would speed up LNG export process

An energy bill introduced to the US Senate on Wednesday would, if adopted, speed up the processing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

A major provision in the bill would require the Department of Energy to approve or deny applications to export LNG to non-free trade agreement countries within 45 days of final action at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) or the Maritime Administration.

That effectively gives a boost to would-be LNG exporters and the shipping lines that would be carrying the exportable fuel.

The politically bipartisan legislative package is the product of a number of Senate hearings in recent months.

The principal movers of the bill have been Republican Senator for Alaska, Lisa Murkowski, who chairs the Senate Energy Committee, and Democratic Senator for Washington – and energy committee member – Maria Cantwell.
