Contract for new Montevideo port terminal goes to Abengoa

A $93 million contract to build a new port terminal at Capurro in Montevideo, Uruguay has been awarded to a consortium led by Spanish multinational engineering firm Abengoa.

The terminal will be for handling fisheries products for international markets.

Work will involve the addition of about 1,000 metres length of piers to accommodate international fishing vessels, as well as land reclamation, paving, drainage, connecting utilities and installing a wastewater system.

The winning consortium would also operate the piers under a 30-year concession.

According to Abengoa the engineering works are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2015, with a deadline of nine months for the drafting of the design and 30 months for its execution.

Abengoa has been a significant presence in construction in Uruguay since 1980.
