Iraqi forces relieve Baiji refinery
The Iraqi Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced that its forces have finally secured the town of Baiji and the associated oil refinery after months of fighting against Islamic State militants.
The Iraqi authorities have made this claim before, but this time the MoD released a video on 20 November showing its forces on the main road running through the heavily damaged but quiet town of Baiji and then at the refinery 7 km to the north. The forces included M1A1 tanks and Iraqi National Police M1117 armoured vehicles.NA
A team of special forces and Shia militiamen have reportedly managed to hold a section of the refinery with the support of Iraqi Army helicopters since the facility was surrounded by Sunni militants in June.
