USCG monitors oil spill off Bayonne, New Jersey

The US Coast Guard (USCG) is continuing to monitor a weekend oil spill in the waters off Bayonne, New Jersey

USCG estimates somewhat less than 1,000 gallons of oil spilled near the International-Matex Tank Terminal (IMTT) when a tugboat ran into a fuel terminal pier.

In response to Saturday night’s incident Coast Guard pollution responders and IMTT crewmembers launched more than 2,500 feet of containment boom and secured the source of the oil. Contracted crews were recovering the spilled material.

The IMTT is about 10 miles south of Manhattan, near where the Kill van Kull tidal strait – between Staten Island, New York, and Bayonne – meets Upper New York Harbour.

USCG, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation crews were patrolling by vehicle, watercraft and aircraft to ensure no oil made it out of the containment boom area.

As of Tuesday there were no reports of wildlife being affected by the spill.
